Internet Explorer Tips

Home Page
If you find a Web page you'd like to see whenever you load your browser, set it as your browser's Home Page:
  bullet Internet Explorer: choose Tools or View (dependant on version), then Internet Options, click Use Current button and click OK
  bullet Netscape Navigator: choose Edit, Preferences, select Navigator option, choose Home Page on the right and click Use Current Page

Translations
Web pages written in a foreign language can be translated if you copy the address and drop it into the translation textbox at:

  bullet http://babelfish.altavista.com
  bullet from the lists, choose the from and to language and click Translate to view the translated page

Add A Translate Button
If you frequently need to tranlate Web pages, add the Altavista translation button to your browser by following the instructions at:

  bullet http://doc.altavista.com/help/search/babel_tool.shtml

Radio
Listen to the radio while surfing the net. Choose from a variety of stations to visit and listen to. Go to:

 if you don't already have Windows Media Player download it at: www.microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer

Two At A Time
Surf two web sites at the same time by opening two browser windows. Both windows operate independantly of each other:

  bullet Internet Explorer: choose File, New, then Window (shortcut Ctrl N)
  bullet Netscape Navigator: choose Navigator Window

Web Shortcuts
Add a shortcut of a Web page on your Desktop

  bullet fisrt view the page in your browser
  bullet Internet Explorer: right-click page, choose Create Shortcut and click OK
  bullet Netscape Navigator: right-click page, choose Create Shortcut and click OK

Online Auctions
Read the fine print before you join an online auction explaining your legal obligations and protection. On some sites a losing bid can become a winning bid in a few days, please be aware of this situation. Other sites offer services to protect you against a fradulent seller.

 

Privacy
Maintain your privacy when visiting web pages that require you to enter your e-mail address to log in. Do not use your primary e-mail address (if you don't like junk mail), instead try signing up for a free e-mail service like hotmail:

Find The Searched Text
When typing text into a search engine, you can find the text on the page by using the browser's Find option:

  bullet Internet Explorer: choose Edit, Find (on this page) [shortcut Ctrl F], type in text, and click Find Next
  bullet Netscape Navigator: choose Edit, then Find in Page [shortcut Ctrl F], type in text and click Find Next

Save For Later
View an entire Web page offline in Internet Explorer:

  bullet choose File, then Save As, then choose a folder for the file and from the Save As drop-down list; choose Web Page, complete(*.htm,*.html) and click save
  bullet to view the page open the file and it will appear with all the images included

Full Screen
View more of a Web page in Internet Explorer by pressing the Full Screen button on the Toolbar or F11 (toggles screen).
 

Multiple Downloads
You don't have to stop surfing when you are downloading a file. Open a new window using Ctrl N. Also, most browsers let you download more than one file at a time.
 

FTP (downloads)
If you are doing a lot of downloading, use FTP software that allow more control such as resuming interrupted downloads and scheduling a list of them:

Zip Files
When you download files, chances are they will be compressed into a file with a .ZIP extension. To use the files you have to unzip them. Download a trial version of WinZip at:

Copying Text
Copy text from a Web page and paste into any word processor:

  bullet highlight the text on the Web page with your mouse and press Ctrl C
  bullet then go to your document and press Ctrl V to paste it

Copying Images
Right-click an image and choose Copy
 

Viewing Images (when turned off)
When your surfing with the display image turned off, you can still view the image by right-clicking and choosing:

  bullet Show Picture in Internet Explorer
  bullet Show Image in Netscape Navigator

Instant Messengers
Download and use instant messaging services to know when your friends and family are online. Here are some of the popular ones:

  ICQ
  MSN Messenger
  Yahoo! Messenger

Right-Clicking
Bypass the menus by developing a habit of using the right mouse button wherever you are in your browser. Right-clicking the toolbar lets you customize toolbars and menus, right clicking Web pages will give you multiple options.
 

Customize Toolbars
Internet Explorer lets you customize toolsbars to display buttons you use and remove the one s you do not. There are also other buttons that are not displayed by default:

  bullet right-click on the toolbar, choose Customize
  bullet then choose your buttons to be added or removed and press Close

Paid Browsing $$$
Use a customized version of the Internet Explorer browser to get paid for surfing the Web. Warning: you'll get a lot of ads that pop up. More details at:

Browser Skins
Bored of the same look your browser has. Change the look of Internet Explorer (4 or later only), visit:

Disable Call Waiting
Inbound calls interrupt your connection:

  bullet put *70, in front of the number you use to dial up to the Internet

Search Multiple Sites
Some Web search engines let you search multiple search engines at the same time:

  bullet example: Ask Jeeves will search sites such as Altavista, Excite, WebCrawler, About.com and more for keywords and will return the top matches at each site.

Surf and Watch TV
Web sites like
WorldWide Internet TV offer TV channels from all over the world. It appears on your screeen in a small window as you surf.

There a lot of sites that offer good resource for research projects or school assignments, try my favorite:

Web Fax
Modems come with software that let send fax but you can't do it while surfing the Internet. As an alternative use a free fax receiving service like:

  bullet eFax
  bullet you get your own fax number and the service forwards all your faxes through email. You can receive faxes anytime and best of all it's free!

Share Photos Online
If you have a scanner or digital camera, share your photos online with friends and family by using these services at:

  Adobe ActiveShare
  Club Photo

You need to download some software so you can upload your images. Follow the instructions at these sites.

Foreign Chat
Chat online with someone who speaks another language. First the hard part, get them to meet you at:

  bullet Word2word
  bullet hint: this service is probably more useful for the business type who have a language barrier with other (foreign) business partners

You'll find multiple translating chat rooms there and you, your friend can both follow the conversation.

To install Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and Internet Tools, your computer must meet or exceed the following system requirements:

  bullet A 486 with a 66 megahertz (MHz) processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  bullet For Windows 95 or Windows 98: 16 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM) minimum
  bullet For Windows NT 4.0: 32 MB of RAM minimum, and you must be running Service Pack 3 or later
  bullet For Windows 2000: 64 MB of RAM minimum
  bullet For Windows Me: 32 MB of RAM minimum
  bullet Mouse
  bullet Modem or Internet connection
     

Note Total download size for a typical installation is approximately 17 megabytes (MB). However, because setup only downloads files that are necessary for your computer, the size may vary between 6 and 17 MB.

  

How to use
 

Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.

 

How to uninstall
 

Make sure Internet Explorer is not running.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and Internet Tools.
  4. Click Add/Remove (Change/Remove in Windows 2000).
